France VAT refunds: a shopping guide for visitors

A French boutique price and the amount you ultimately pay are different questions. Start with the official refund process, then compare the complete purchase cost.

By Wandering Wishlist editorial · · How we research

The short answer

Eligible visitors may reclaim VAT on qualifying purchases in France, but the refund is not automatic. French Customs describes a minimum purchase above €100, including tax, in the same store on the same day. Residence, visit length, age and the nature of the goods also affect eligibility; check the official guidance linked below before relying on a refund.

Ask for the net amount before buying

Ask the retailer whether the purchase qualifies, which refund operator it uses, what documentation it needs and how much you would receive after fees. Customs validates export; it does not pay the refund. Keep the retailer’s quote separate from a generic VAT-rate calculation.

Plan around leaving the EU

The export validation belongs to your departure from the European Union. If your itinerary continues to another EU country, ask how to validate the French form at your final EU exit. If departing through France, follow the PABLO barcode process and any instruction to see customs. Keep the goods available for inspection before checking baggage.

Build a comparison you can update

Create six lines in your notes: the exact reference, French price in euros, home-currency exchange rate, expected net refund in euros, card fee and additional home/travel costs. Compare the resulting total with the tax-inclusive home price. Record the date beside each quote.

An illustrative decision, not a boutique quote

Suppose a fictional purchase costs €1,200, the net refund quote is €100, and one euro costs 1.10 units of your home currency. Before card fees and home costs, the overseas amount is 1,210 home-currency units. A 3% card fee on the original purchase adds 39.60. These example inputs do not represent an actual bag, a guaranteed refund or the current exchange rate.

Questions to resolve before payment

Can the boutique supply the exact variant? What are the return conditions? What net refund is quoted, and when and how is it paid? Which departure point handles export validation? What costs or declarations apply when you return home? A promising comparison is a reason to investigate these questions, not a substitute for them.
